Pralhad Joshi Reviews Implementation Of PM Modi’s Free Online Coaching Initiative
Pralhad Joshi reviews rollout of PM Modi’s free coaching initiative.
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday reviewed the implementation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative to provide free online coaching to young people preparing for competitive examinations. Joshi held a meeting with senior officials of the Department of Higher Education to discuss the proposed programme and the steps required to develop a national platform for aspirants.
According to Joshi, the meeting focused on creating a platform that would make quality learning content, expert guidance and structured preparation accessible to students across the country. The initiative was announced by Prime Minister Modi during his Independence Day address on August 15, with the stated objective of reducing the financial burden faced by families who spend heavily on private coaching.
Modi had described coaching fees as a burden for poor and middle-class families and announced plans to provide free online coaching for various competitive examinations. He said the initiative would bring together India's digital public infrastructure, teachers and educational resources to create a nationwide network offering free preparation support to young people.

The proposed programme is intended to widen access to competitive-exam preparation by providing students with learning resources and expert guidance without requiring them to enrol in expensive coaching centres. The initiative comes amid continuing debate over the growing dependence on private coaching for examinations and concerns about the financial pressure it can place on students and their families.
The issue of competitive examinations and education reforms has remained a major focus of youth mobilisation in recent months. Concerns surrounding examination integrity, including the NEET-UG paper leak controversy, as well as demands for changes to the coaching system, have contributed to wider discussions about improving access to quality education and making competitive examinations more equitable.
The Education Ministry's review is expected to guide the development and implementation of the proposed online coaching network. By bringing educational content, teachers and digital infrastructure together, the government aims to create a broader support system for competitive-exam aspirants and reduce dependence on costly private coaching programmes.
