Powerful Thunderstorm Hits Tamil Nadu, Causes Rs 5-6 Crore Damage In Thoothukudi

Powerful thunderstorm hits Tamil Nadu, damages worth Rs 5-6 crore.

A powerful tornado-like weather phenomenon swept through parts of Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu on Sunday evening, causing extensive damage to homes, public infrastructure, a toll plaza and a private amusement park. Dramatic videos captured by residents near the Thoothukudi airport area showed a towering column of swirling dust and debris moving rapidly across the landscape, prompting many observers to describe the event as a tornado. However, weather officials later clarified that the phenomenon was not a true tornado but a severe thunderstorm-related atmospheric disturbance.

The most severe impact was reported in the villages of Vagaikulam and Mudivaithanendal, located along the Thoothukudi–Tirunelveli highway, around 20 kilometres from Thoothukudi city. Residents said strong winds uprooted trees, snapped electricity poles, ripped off roofing sheets and damaged household property across a residential area containing nearly 200 homes. Debris was reportedly carried over considerable distances, with some materials becoming entangled in overhead power lines after the storm subsided.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the rotating column intensified. Local residents reported that fans, metal sheets and other loose objects were lifted into the air before being scattered across the affected region. A private theme park near the Vagaikulam toll plaza suffered extensive destruction, with several amusement installations damaged or destroyed. The nearby toll collection centre also sustained damage to glass panels, computer systems and operational equipment.

Authorities were forced to temporarily suspend toll collection and allow vehicles to pass freely while assessments were carried out. Preliminary estimates from residents suggested that damage to homes alone could amount to nearly Rs 2 crore. When losses at the theme park, toll plaza and surrounding infrastructure are included, the overall financial impact is believed to be between Rs 5 crore and Rs 6 crore. Despite the scale of destruction, only two minor injuries were reported and no fatalities occurred.

One of the most alarming incidents involved a group of nine youngsters who were playing cricket in an open ground when the vortex approached. Residents claimed the winds became so intense that the players feared being lifted off the ground. They reportedly clung to one another and crouched down until the storm moved away, avoiding serious injury. The account highlighted the sudden and unpredictable nature of the weather event.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai stated that the phenomenon was most likely caused by strong updrafts generated beneath a cumulonimbus cloud associated with intense thunderstorms over southern Tamil Nadu. Meteorologists explained that the rotating funnel-like structure was likely a localized convective vortex, dust whirl or transient funnel cloud rather than a genuine tornado. While such events can produce destructive winds and dramatic visuals, experts noted that the atmospheric conditions typically required for tornado formation are rarely present in the region during the southwest monsoon season.
