Post Office Passport Seva Kendra Opened At Drass In Kargil District Of Ladakh

In a major boost to public infrastructure and digital service delivery in the region, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh and Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Wednesday jointly inaugurated a new Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) in Kargil. The collaborative facility, established at the sub-post office in Kargil, marks the second dedicated passport seva kendra to become operational in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The strategic rollout aims to bring critical central government facilities directly to citizens residing in remote and geographically challenging border pockets.

The newly commissioned center operates under a joint institutional framework combining the resources of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Department of Posts. Historically, the sprawling and mountainous region of Ladakh was served by only a single POPSK located in Leh, which has been operational since 2017. With the launch of the Kargil facility, the central government has successfully integrated its 457th POPSK into the national administrative network, ensuring wider territorial coverage.

The operationalization of this center fulfills a long-pending and crucial structural demand put forth by local administrative bodies and residents of the Kargil district. Prior to this deployment, applicants seeking basic passport processing, documentation, or renewals were forced to undertake grueling, multi-day journeys across rugged terrain to reach distant processing hubs in Leh or Srinagar. This logistical gap frequently caused substantial financial burdens, long procedural delays, and immense physical strain for families and professionals residing in the frontier district.

Local authorities highlighted that the localized passport hub will immediately streamline global travel opportunities for multiple target demographics across the region. It is expected to particularly ease processing pipelines for regional students securing foreign university admissions, local youths looking for overseas employment, and thousands of elderly residents attempting to book annual religious pilgrimages like Haj and Umrah. By handling everything from registration to verification locally, the facility significantly shortens the overall application lifecycle.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena emphasized that the initiative perfectly aligns with the central government's ongoing mandate to bolster "Ease of Living" and modern public infrastructure since Ladakh transitioned into a Union Territory in 2019. He further revealed that roughly 34 essential government departments in the territory have successfully migrated their consumer workflows online. The expansion of the physical postal-passport network ensures that those residing in the farthest corners of the district maintain equitable, transparent, and hassle-free access to governance.
