Political Debate Grows as Congress Leaders React to Tharoor’s Remarks on PM Modi

Jairam Ramesh responds to Tharoor’s praise of PM Modi.

The Congress party on Saturday sought to contain political controversy triggered by senior MP Shashi Tharoor after he publicly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his diplomatic outreach during recent international engagements. The party leadership responded by emphasising that internal differences of opinion are part of its democratic functioning and do not reflect organisational discord.

The remarks come amid discussions sparked by Tharoor’s comments on India’s diplomatic positioning during the G7 Summit, where he acknowledged aspects of Prime Minister Modi’s engagement with global leaders, including a meeting with former US President Donald Trump. His statement drew attention within political circles and triggered debate over whether such praise aligns with the Congress party’s broader opposition stance on the central government’s foreign policy.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh addressed the issue, stating that the party has always allowed its members the freedom to express their views on matters of national and international importance. He said that such differences are part of a healthy democratic structure within the organisation, where leaders are encouraged to engage in discussions and present their perspectives both within internal forums and in public discourse.

Ramesh further explained that the Congress tradition accommodates a wide range of viewpoints, particularly among experienced leaders who bring diverse backgrounds and expertise to policy-related discussions. According to him, such expressions should not be interpreted as contradictions of the party line but rather as contributions to a broader democratic dialogue that strengthens internal debate and policy understanding.

The issue has once again highlighted the occasional divergence in tone among Congress leaders when addressing the government’s foreign policy. While the party has consistently maintained a critical stance toward the Modi administration on multiple issues, including diplomacy and international relations, individual leaders like Tharoor have at times acknowledged specific diplomatic initiatives, leading to periodic public discussions about internal coherence.

Political observers note that such differences are not uncommon in large national parties, where senior members often have independent standing and long experience in parliamentary and diplomatic affairs. In Tharoor’s case, his background as a former diplomat has frequently influenced his public commentary, particularly on matters involving international relations and India’s global engagement strategy.

Despite the debate, Congress leadership has attempted to project unity by framing the discussion as evidence of internal democracy rather than disagreement. Party insiders suggest that such expressions are unlikely to impact organisational stability but may continue to generate media attention, especially when they involve high-profile leaders and sensitive subjects like foreign policy.

The development also underscores the broader challenge faced by opposition parties in managing diverse voices while maintaining a consistent political narrative. As India’s foreign policy remains a key area of national debate, comments from senior leaders across party lines are likely to continue drawing scrutiny, particularly when they intersect with the government’s high-profile international engagements.
