Polish Minister Claims PM Modi’s Diplomacy Helped Prevent Possible Nuclear Escalation

Polish minister makes claim about Modi’s role in Ukraine crisis.

Poland has praised India’s role in diplomatic efforts linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Teofil Bartoszewski saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi is among the few global leaders whose views are taken seriously by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Bartoszewski claimed that India’s longstanding relationship with Russia gives New Delhi a unique position to encourage restraint and support efforts aimed at reducing tensions.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Bartoszewski referred to developments in late 2022 and claimed that Prime Minister Modi had played a role in persuading Russia against the possible use of tactical nuclear weapons during the war. The remarks highlighted Poland’s view that countries with established ties to Moscow can have greater influence in encouraging dialogue and preventing further escalation.

Bartoszewski said India’s historical relationship with Russia, including its earlier ties with the Soviet Union and its non-aligned foreign policy approach, has allowed New Delhi to maintain communication channels with Moscow. He described Modi as a leader who can potentially influence Putin’s decisions and said India could contribute to efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

The Polish minister also mentioned China as another country whose views could carry importance in Moscow because both nations are not viewed by Russia as hostile powers. He said messages calling for restraint may have a stronger impact when they come from countries that maintain diplomatic engagement with Russia rather than from nations directly opposing Moscow.

Bartoszewski also addressed differences between Poland and India over New Delhi’s purchase of discounted Russian crude oil. He said Warsaw had previously criticised the imports, arguing they contributed to Russia’s wartime economy, but acknowledged India’s economic reasons for purchasing oil at reduced prices. According to him, both countries now better understand each other’s positions, and the issue is no longer a major obstacle in bilateral relations.

The comments come amid continued international attention on India’s independent foreign policy approach and its relationship with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously praised India’s approach, saying attempts to pressure New Delhi over its ties with Moscow would not be effective. Putin has said India’s decisions are based on its national interests and welcomed the development of its relations with multiple countries.
