Police Use Tear Gas, Cane-Charge To Disperse Jantar Mantar Protesters

Fresh clashes erupted between protesters and security personnel at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday night, prompting police to use tear gas shells and a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. According to Delhi Police, at least six police personnel, including two Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP), sustained injuries during the violence. Security arrangements in the area were subsequently intensified, with authorities also activating internet jammers as a precautionary measure.

Police said the confrontation escalated after sections of the crowd allegedly turned violent. Videos released by the police showed protesters raising slogans, allegedly pelting stones and confronting security personnel deployed at the protest site. The footage also appeared to show one police officer being surrounded and assaulted by a group of protesters. Officials stated that law enforcement personnel responded by attempting to disperse the gathering and restore order amid the deteriorating situation.

The videos also captured several protesters attempting to calm the crowd and urging others to refrain from attacking police personnel, although their efforts were reportedly unsuccessful. Police said the unrest continued for some time before the situation was brought under control. Among those injured were ACP Vivek Bhagat and ACP Jay Prakash, who were taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet disclosed the full extent of injuries sustained by other personnel.

The clashes occurred amid continuing protests at Jantar Mantar over the alleged NEET paper leak and related demands for accountability. The protest site has witnessed heightened security following recent demonstrations in the national capital. Police have launched an investigation into the violence and are examining video footage and other evidence to identify those allegedly involved in the clashes. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
