Police Lathicharge TRE-4 Aspirants Protesting Recruitment Delay In Patna
Police use lathicharge on TRE-4 aspirants protesting delay.
Police resorted to lathicharge on Friday after thousands of teacher recruitment aspirants protesting the delay in the fourth phase of the Teachers’ Recruitment Examination (TRE-4) by the Bihar Public Service Commission blocked roads in Patna, triggering tense scenes and injuries among several students. The protest was organised by aspirants demanding the immediate release of the TRE-4 advertisement, which they claim has been repeatedly delayed despite earlier assurances from authorities. The demonstrators alleged that the commission had been “dilly-dallying” on the notification process and said they were left with “no more patience” after missing multiple expected deadlines.
According to students, the last official timeline indicated that the advertisement was expected by April 19, but no notification was issued even after that date. Many of them accused the authorities of failing to honour commitments made earlier regarding the recruitment process. The recruitment exercise is linked to the large-scale hiring of teachers in Bihar, with government estimates indicating around 46,000 vacancies expected to be filled through TRE-4. Earlier, during a budget discussion in the state assembly, then education minister Sunil Kumar had stated that the recruitment process would begin soon, reinforcing expectations among candidates.
The issue gained further traction after the General Administration Department had reportedly sent the requisition for TRE-4 to the BPSC, following which officials had indicated that the advertisement would be issued shortly. However, the continued delay has led to mounting frustration among aspirants, culminating in Friday’s protest. The agitation also comes in the backdrop of policy changes in Bihar’s education recruitment framework. In a pre-election announcement, then Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had declared the implementation of a domicile-based preference in teachers’ recruitment, making TRE-4 the first exam under the revised policy.

During the protest, students gathered in large numbers at key roads in Patna, disrupting traffic movement. Police intervened to disperse the crowd, leading to a lathicharge in which several aspirants sustained injuries, according to eyewitness accounts. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement detailing the extent of injuries or detentions. The incident has intensified calls from student groups for transparency and a fixed timetable for recruitment, as pressure continues to mount on the BPSC and the state government to announce the long-pending examination notification.
