PM Narendra Modi Highlights Yoga As A Global Unifying Force
PM promotes yoga as global unifying force.
PM Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted yoga as a powerful force for unity, saying the ancient Indian practice has the ability to bring people together not only within the country but across the world. Speaking at the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations held at Red Road in Kolkata, the Prime Minister emphasized that yoga is more than a physical exercise and can serve as a foundation for global harmony and peace.
Addressing the gathering, Modi said yoga has a unique capacity to connect individuals and communities, describing it as a practice that symbolically unites humanity. He noted that in an increasingly divided and conflict-prone world, yoga can act as a stabilizing influence by promoting inner balance and collective well-being. His remarks came amid ongoing global geopolitical tensions, which he suggested underscored the relevance of such ancient wisdom in modern times.
The Prime Minister referred to the teachings of Maharshi Aurobindo, noting that yoga is not limited to practice on a mat but is deeply connected to the philosophy of life itself. He stressed that yoga should be understood as a way of living that fosters self-awareness, discipline, and unity. According to him, when practiced sincerely, it becomes a guiding principle that strengthens both individual character and societal cohesion.

Modi also highlighted this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” stating that the discipline helps individuals maintain physical vitality and mental clarity even as they grow older. He said that yoga provides a structured approach to health and lifestyle, helping people achieve balance in an age where stress and imbalance are increasingly common. He further referenced teachings from the Bhagavad Gita to underline the importance of equilibrium in daily life.
Expanding on this idea, the Prime Minister said that most people struggle with imbalance in modern lifestyles, and yoga offers practical tools to restore stability. He urged citizens to integrate yoga into their daily routines rather than limiting it to a symbolic observance once a year. According to him, consistent practice can help individuals achieve better health outcomes and contribute to a more harmonious society.
Concluding his address, Modi called for yoga to be passed on to future generations as a way of life rather than a ceremonial event. He said its values of balance, self-awareness, and inner strength could help societies navigate division and foster cooperation. The event in Kolkata formed part of nationwide celebrations marking International Yoga Day, with participation from thousands across different states.
