PM Modi’s Power Talks with Fiji PM Boost Pacific Ties

India-Fiji deepen trade, security ties in historic meet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive discussions with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka at Hyderabad House on Monday, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Fiji in critical areas such as trade, investment, maritime security, and climate resilience. The talks, part of Rabuka’s first official three-day visit to India as Fiji’s leader, underscored the deep historical and cultural bonds between the two nations, which date back to 1879 when Indian laborers arrived in Fiji under the British indenture system.

Rabuka, accompanied by his spouse Sulueti Rabuka, Health Minister Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, and senior officials, was warmly welcomed by Modi, who hosted a ceremonial lunch in his honor. The Fijian leader’s visit, following President Droupadi Murmu’s trip to Fiji in August 2024, highlights India’s growing focus on Pacific partnerships. “Welcoming an important Global South and FIPIC partner,” the Ministry of External Affairs posted on X, emphasizing the visit’s role in deepening the India-Fiji partnership across diverse sectors.

The leaders explored cooperation in health, education, renewable energy, and digital transformation, building on the 6th Foreign Office Consultations held in Suva in July 2025. Rabuka is also set to deliver a keynote address on “Ocean of Peace” at the Indian Council of World Affairs, focusing on regional stability and maritime cooperation, key priorities for Fiji as a Pacific island nation. He will meet President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, further cementing diplomatic ties.
