PM Modi’s Mega Highways to End Delhi’s Traffic Nightmare

New roads worth Rs 11,000 crore transform Delhi’s connectivity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two major infrastructure projects—the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II)—worth nearly Rs 11,000 crore, aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion in Delhi and its surrounding areas. These projects, part of a broader plan to decongest the capital, promise to slash travel times and enhance connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR).

The 10.1 km Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway, built at a cost of Rs 5,360 crore, connects key areas like Shiv Murti and Dwarka Sector-21 to the Delhi-Haryana border, offering seamless multi-modal access to Yashobhoomi, Delhi Metro’s Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and Dwarka’s bus depot.

The 19 km Haryana section was previously opened in March 2024. Meanwhile, the Alipur to Dichaon Kalan stretch of UER-II, costing Rs 5,580 crore, includes new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, easing pressure on Delhi’s Inner and Outer Ring Roads, Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-09.

“These highways will transform Delhi-NCR, removing daily commuting hassles,” Modi said during the inauguration. He highlighted UER-II’s innovative use of millions of tonnes of repurposed waste, addressing Delhi’s garbage crisis sustainably while building robust infrastructure. “Delhi is becoming a model of growth for a developing India,” he added.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari claimed the projects will cut Delhi’s traffic jams by 50%, improving industrial connectivity and goods movement. The new spurs will provide direct access to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, reducing travel time to IGI Airport from these areas and Gurugram.

Modi also engaged with laborers during an inspection of the Dwarka Expressway and held a roadshow at Mundka-Bakkarwala Village Toll Plaza, underscoring the projects’ significance. With enhanced connectivity and reduced congestion, these highways mark a significant step toward modernizing Delhi’s infrastructure and improving the quality of life for NCR residents.
