PM Modi's 'Man Vs Wild' Episode Resurfaces After Bear Grylls Praise And 2019 Controversy

Bear Grylls' praise revives 2019 'Man Vs Wild' controversy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appearance on Discovery Channel's Man vs Wild has returned to the spotlight after British adventurer and television host Bear Grylls described him as one of the "most powerful leaders in the world." Grylls' remarks have also revived memories of the political controversy surrounding the episode, which was broadcast months after the 2019 Pulwama terror attack. Bear Grylls shared photographs on X featuring himself with Prime Minister Modi, former US President Barack Obama and Prince William of the United Kingdom. Alongside the images, the survival expert praised the leaders he had filmed with over the years.

“I've met some of the most powerful leaders in the world. The best ones were never the loudest,” Grylls wrote in his post, highlighting his experiences filming with the three global figures. Prime Minister Modi featured in a special episode of Man vs Wild that was filmed in Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand and aired in August 2019. During the programme, Modi and Grylls explored the forest while discussing wildlife conservation, environmental protection and the importance of preserving nature. The episode attracted significant viewership both in India and internationally.

However, the programme also became the subject of political controversy due to its association with the Pulwama terror attack, in which 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed on February 14, 2019, after a suicide bomber targeted their convoy in Jammu and Kashmir. The Congress alleged that Prime Minister Modi had continued filming the television programme after becoming aware of the attack. Opposition leaders questioned the timing of the shoot and accused the Prime Minister of prioritising the recording despite the unfolding national tragedy.

The Union government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rejected those allegations, maintaining that the sequence of events had been misrepresented. They stated that the filming schedule had concluded before details of the terror attack became available to the Prime Minister and denied claims that he had continued shooting after being informed about the incident. Government officials and BJP leaders argued that there was no overlap between the programme's production and the Prime Minister's response to the Pulwama attack. They also maintained that the allegations made by the Congress were politically motivated and not supported by the facts surrounding the filming timeline. The Pulwama attack remains one of the deadliest terror strikes against Indian security personnel in recent years and led to a sharp escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan.

It also prompted significant political debate during the run-up to the 2019 general election, with the Man vs Wild episode becoming part of the broader public discourse. Grylls' latest comments have once again brought attention to the episode, though this time in the context of his praise for world leaders he has worked with. His post highlighted Modi alongside Barack Obama and Prince William, describing them as leaders whose influence stemmed from quiet confidence rather than loud rhetoric. While the renewed attention has revived discussion of the earlier controversy, the Man vs Wild episode remains one of the most-watched special editions of the survival series, remembered both for its focus on wildlife conservation and for the political debate that accompanied its release.
