PM Modi's Bold Saffron Look at 79th Independence Day Captivates Red Fort

PM Modi's vibrant saffron attire symbolizes India's ambitious vision for a developed nation by 2047.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered his 12th Independence Day address at the historic Red Fort, captivating onlookers with a striking all-saffron ensemble. Donning a saffron turban paired with a white kurta-churidar, a saffron bandhgala jacket, and a tricolour stole, Modi’s attire reflected the theme of Naya Bharat, embodying the government’s vision of achieving a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047.

Modi’s sartorial choices have become a hallmark of his Independence Day appearances, each year showcasing a unique blend of tradition and symbolism. Last year, for the 78th Independence Day on August 15, 2024, he opted for a multi-coloured Rajasthani leheriya print turban, paired with a white kurta-churidar. In 2023, he chose a vibrant Rajasthani bandhani print turban in yellow, green, and red, complemented by an off-white kurta, churidar, and a black V-neck jacket.

Since his first Independence Day speech in 2014, Modi’s turban selections have consistently drawn attention. His debut featured a bright red Jodhpuri bandhej turban, followed by a yellow turban with multi-coloured criss-cross patterns in 2015. In 2016, he wore a pink and yellow tie-and-dye turban, and in 2017, a bright red and yellow turban with golden criss-cross lines. In 2018, he chose a plain saffron turban, a nod to simplicity and tradition.

The 2020 celebrations, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, saw Modi incorporate a white scarf with a saffron border to cover his face, blending health precautions with his signature style. In 2021, he sported a saffron and cream safa with a long tail, paired with a half-sleeve kurta and fitted churidar. In 2022, his saffron headgear with red patterns, matched with a traditional kurta, churidar, blue jacket, and stole, further highlighted his penchant for vibrant, culturally significant attire.

Modi’s carefully curated outfits not only reflect India’s rich textile heritage but also serve as a visual representation of his government’s vision for a progressive and united India. As the nation progresses toward its centennial Independence Day in 2047, Modi’s sartorial choices continue to resonate with themes of tradition, unity, and ambition.
