PM Modi Wishes Devotees as Chhath Puja Concludes With Sunrise Arghya

Prime Minister Narendra Modi showered heartfelt greetings on millions of devotees as Chhath Puja culminated nationwide on Tuesday morning with the sacred 'Usha Arghya'—the final offering to the rising Sun God—closing the rigorous four-day festival of faith, fasting, and family. In a series of posts on X, Modi celebrated the tradition’s unique dual worship of the setting and rising sun, praying for universal welfare, happiness, prosperity, and success under the divine grace of Chhathi Maiya.
The festival, predominantly observed by the Purvanchali community in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and migrant hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, saw millions gather at riverbanks, ponds, and artificial ghats from dawn. Devotees—mostly women—concluded their 36-hour nirjala vrat (fast without water) by offering fruits, thekua, and seasonal crops in bamboo baskets to the Sun God, seeking blessings for family health and harmony. Despite urban challenges, authorities in Delhi created over 1,000 ghats, including along the Yamuna, enabling safe and grand celebrations.
Modi had set the festive tone days earlier, urging citizens to share Chhath songs online and promising to amplify them. He delivered on the third day by reposting a soulful track with evening arghya wishes: “Our tradition of offering arghya to the setting sun is very unique. May Lord Surya bless all with welfare, happiness, and success. Jai Chhathi Maiya!” His final message praised the “divine glimpse” of India’s grand cultural heritage and congratulated fasting devotees for enduring one of Hinduism’s toughest vrats.

From Patna’s Ganga ghats packed with over 50 lakh devotees to Mumbai’s Juhu Beach and Kolkata’s Babughat, the festival radiated unity and devotion. Special trains, enhanced security, and LED-lit ghats ensured smooth participation. In Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta joined rituals at ITO, while political leaders across parties offered arghya, reinforcing Chhath’s growing national stature.
As the Sun rose on the festival’s end, families broke their fasts with prasad, marking closure with music, folk songs, and community feasts. This year’s Chhath—blending ancient rituals with digital engagement via Modi’s call—highlighted India’s living traditions, fostering inclusivity and cultural pride across generations.
