PM Modi Urges Peace and Trust Between Manipur’s Hills and Valley Communities

PM Modi seeks lasting peace in Manipur during first visit since ethnic clashes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public gathering at Imphal’s historic Kangla Fort, emphasizing the need to build a “strong bridge of trust” between the people of the Hills and the Valley. Modi condemned the violence as “not only unfortunate but also a grave injustice” to Manipur’s heritage and future, pledging his government’s unwavering commitment to reconciliation and progress.

Modi described Manipur as the “ratna” (jewel) in India’s crown, underscoring its cultural and strategic significance. He highlighted the government’s efforts to heal the wounds caused by the ethnic conflict, which has claimed numerous lives and displaced thousands, particularly between the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley and the Kuki-inhabited Hills. “Together, we must take Manipur forward on the path of peace and development,” he urged, calling for collective action to restore harmony and confidence in the state.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to Manipur’s contributions to national security, lauding the valor of its soldiers in operations like the successful Operation Sindoor. He emphasized the state’s integral role in India’s defense framework, stating, “The country will always remember their courage.” Modi’s remarks resonated with the audience, reinforcing Manipur’s pride in its contributions to the nation.

Additionally, Modi celebrated the pivotal role of Manipur’s women in driving economic growth, noting their leadership in various sectors. He positioned the Northeast as a cornerstone of India’s progress, declaring, “The 21st century belongs to the Northeast.” The address outlined a vision for inclusive development, with initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, education, and economic opportunities to uplift Manipur.

This landmark visit signals a renewed focus on resolving Manipur’s ethnic tensions through dialogue and development. By advocating for unity and trust, Modi aims to bridge the divide between communities, fostering a peaceful and prosperous future for the state while reinforcing its integral role in India’s growth story.
