PM Modi Urges India to Lead Deep Space Exploration

PM urges scientists, startups to lead space revolution.

On National Space Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi challenged India’s scientific community and private sector to prepare for deep space exploration and transform the nation into a global space powerhouse. Speaking at an event commemorating the historic Chandrayaan-3 moon landing in 2023, Modi urged scientists to ready themselves for ambitious missions beyond Earth’s orbit, emphasizing India’s growing role in space innovation.

Modi set an audacious goal for the private sector, asking whether five space startups could achieve unicorn status—valuations of $1 billion—within the next five years. “Can we reach a point where we launch 50 rockets annually?” he asked, pushing for a dramatic scale-up in India’s space capabilities. He assured that his government has the intent and willpower to implement reforms to support this vision, positioning space technology as a cornerstone of national progress.

Highlighting the practical impact of space tech, Modi noted its integration into governance, from satellite-based crop insurance assessments to aiding fishermen with safety information and enhancing disaster management through geospatial data in the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. “Space technology is not just for exploration; it’s about improving lives,” he said.

Reflecting on a recent interaction with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who unfurled India’s flag at the International Space Station, Modi expressed pride in the astronaut’s courage and the aspirations of India’s youth. “When Shukla showed me the tricolour, I was moved beyond words,” he shared, underscoring the emotional weight of India’s space achievements.

In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath echoed Modi’s sentiments, congratulating scientists for their role in elevating India’s global standing. In a post on X, Adityanath hailed the Chandrayaan-3 mission as a symbol of “New India’s” potential, noting that August 23 was designated National Space Day by Modi to honor this milestone. “Our scientists’ dedication and talent have placed India at the pinnacle of space exploration,” he said, extending best wishes to the scientific community.

As India celebrates its lunar triumph and sets its sights on deeper cosmic frontiers, Modi’s call to action signals a bold new era for the nation’s space ambitions, blending innovation, governance, and national pride.
