PM Modi Tours Kartavya Bhavan
New secretariat building boosts efficiency for ministries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan-03, the first of ten planned Common Central Secretariat (CCS) buildings, on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the Central Vista redevelopment project. Designed to enhance efficiency by housing multiple ministries under one roof, the modern facility will accommodate the Home Affairs, External Affairs, Rural Development, MSME, DoPT, Petroleum & Natural Gas ministries, and the Principal Scientific Adviser's office. The government aims to replace outdated structures like Shastri Bhawan and Krishi Bhawan, built between the 1950s and 1970s, which are now deemed structurally inefficient.
Accompanied by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and HUA Secretary Katikithala Srinivas, Modi toured the state-of-the-art building, which boasts a 1.5 lakh square meter plinth area, a 40,000 square meter basement, and parking for 600 cars. Kartavya Bhavan-03 features a creche, yoga room, medical room, cafe, kitchen, multipurpose hall, 24 main conference rooms (seating 45 each), 26 smaller conference rooms (seating 25 each), 67 meeting rooms, and 27 lifts. The HUA Ministry outlined plans for completing CCS buildings 1 and 2 by September 2025 and CCS 10 by April 2026, with CCS 6 and 7 targeted for October 2026.
As part of the transition, offices from older bhawans will temporarily relocate to Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Minto Road, and Netaji Palace for two years. The project retains key buildings like the National Museum, National Archives, Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan, Dr Ambedkar Auditorium, and Vanijya Bhawan. The Central Vista plan also includes a new Parliament, Vice President Enclave, redeveloped Kartavya Path, and an upcoming Executive Enclave with a new Prime Minister’s Office, Cabinet Secretariat, India House, and National Security Council Secretariat, alongside a future prime minister’s residence in its second phase.
