PM Modi To Lead Historic Somnath Temple Shikhar Kumbhabhishek

Somnath Temple prepares for its first Shikhar Kumbhabhishek ceremony during 75th anniversary celebrations.

The Somnath Temple is set to mark a major spiritual and historical milestone on May 11 as part of the “Somnath Amrit Parv 2026” celebrations, commemorating 75 years since the reconstruction of the revered shrine. For the first time in the temple’s modern history, a sacred Kumbhabhishek ritual will be performed atop its towering 90-metre-high Shikhar, or spire, using holy water collected from 11 major pilgrimage sites across India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lead the ceremony, which temple authorities describe as an unprecedented event in the reconstructed temple’s religious tradition. The ritual will involve lifting a large ceremonial vessel, or Kumbh, filled with sanctified water to the summit of the spire using a specially designed 90-metre crane. Priests will then perform the ritual bathing of the temple spire while chanting Vedic hymns, symbolising purification and divine blessing.

Kumbhabhishek is a long-standing ritual tradition in many major temples across South India, where it is generally conducted every decade or so to spiritually renew temple structures. However, despite the Somnath Temple’s immense religious importance as one of Hinduism’s twelve Jyotirlingas, such a ceremony has never before been carried out on the reconstructed temple’s spire since restoration efforts were completed in the mid-20th century.

Religious leaders and members of the temple community have described the event as both spiritually and culturally significant. Hemalbhai Bhatt said devotees and members of the Sompura Brahmin community are expressing deep enthusiasm over witnessing a ritual of this scale and rarity. The ceremony is expected to draw pilgrims, priests, and visitors from across the country.

The event will begin with a grand Mahapuja dedicated to Somnath Mahadev, to be performed by the Prime Minister before the Kumbhabhishek takes place. Organisers say the celebrations are intended not only to honour the temple’s spiritual significance but also to highlight its role as a symbol of cultural resilience and continuity in India’s civilisational history.

The Somnath Temple, located on the western coast of Gujarat, has long held a prominent place in Indian history and Hindu religious tradition. Destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over centuries, the temple’s post-independence reconstruction became a powerful symbol of national restoration and heritage. The upcoming ceremony blends ancient Vedic practices with modern engineering techniques, reflecting both the enduring legacy and evolving traditions of one of India’s most iconic temples.
