PM Modi to Launch Landmark Health-Nutrition Drive for Women and Children

Nationwide campaign targets women’s health, nutrition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch the transformative Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan and the 8th Poshan Maah on September 17, a historic initiative to bolster healthcare and nutrition services for women, adolescent girls, and children across India. Announced by the Union Health Ministry, this ambitious campaign, running until October 2, aims to advance Modi’s vision of a healthy, fit, and developed India by 2047, aligning with the goal of Viksit Bharat.

Jointly spearheaded by the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Women and Child Development (MoWCD), the campaign will deliver comprehensive health services through over 1 lakh health camps at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, community health centers, district hospitals, and other government facilities. This marks the largest-ever health outreach for women and children in India, focusing on screening, early detection, and treatment for non-communicable diseases, anemia, tuberculosis, and sickle cell disease. The initiative will also promote maternal and child health through antenatal care, immunization, and awareness drives on nutrition, menstrual hygiene, lifestyle, and mental health.

The MoWCD will integrate Poshan Maah activities, mobilizing women and adolescent girls through Anganwadi centers for nutrition counseling and recipe demonstrations. Both ministries will drive nationwide awareness campaigns targeting anemia prevention, balanced diets, and healthy lifestyle practices, with a special focus on obesity prevention and voluntary blood donation. “This holistic approach ensures the health and nutrition needs of women and girls are addressed comprehensively,” the Health Ministry stated.

Union Health Minister J P Nadda, in a post on X, called the campaign a game-changer for women’s and children’s healthcare, urging private hospitals and stakeholders to join this Jan Bhagidaari movement. “This is about ensuring better access, quality care, and awareness for all,” he said. Public representatives, including central and state ministers and MPs, will participate, supported by grassroots mobilizers like ASHA workers, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives, Anganwadi workers, self-help groups, Panchayati Raj Institutions, urban local bodies, and MY Bharat volunteers.

Specialist services in gynecology, pediatrics, eye care, ENT, dental, dermatology, and psychiatry will be provided through medical colleges, district hospitals, and central institutions like AIIMS, defense and railway hospitals, ESIC hospitals, and CGHS centers. Several private hospitals have also pledged support, amplifying the campaign’s reach and quality. Other ministries, including Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Tribal Affairs, and Social Justice, will contribute by mobilizing communities, schools, and tribal and disabled populations, while ministries like Defence and Railways will host health camps in their facilities.

The campaign builds on India’s progress in healthcare, with Ayushman Bharat covering over 50 crore people and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs serving rural areas. By integrating health and nutrition with community participation, this initiative aims to empower women as the backbone of strong families, fostering a healthier, more resilient nation. As Modi prepares to kick off this landmark effort, it signals a bold step toward equitable healthcare and a brighter future for India’s women and children.
