PM Modi to Launch ₹22,000 Crore Guwahati-Silchar Expressway in March
PM Modi to lay foundation stone for Guwahati–Silchar expressway, boosting connectivity and infrastructure in Assam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Assam’s Barak Valley on March 14, 2026, to lay the foundation stone for the ₹22,000-crore Guwahati–Silchar expressway and inaugurate the Silchar flyover, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced. The visit highlights the Centre’s continued focus on infrastructure development in the Northeast.
The Guwahati–Silchar expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities to around four-and-a-half hours, compared to over eight hours via the current landslide-prone hill route. The project aims to provide a safer, more direct route, enhancing trade, tourism, and regional connectivity.
Construction is expected to begin soon, with tenders completed, wildlife clearances secured, and land acquisition making strong progress. The Silchar flyover, also to be inaugurated during the visit, will address chronic traffic congestion and improve urban mobility in the town.

On the proposed greenfield airport in Silchar, Sarma confirmed that environmental clearance has been granted, with Cabinet approval pending. He indicated that work could start by March or post the Assam Assembly elections, depending on timelines, further strengthening regional air connectivity.
The March 14 visit continues a series of high-profile engagements by PM Modi in Assam. In recent months, he inaugurated projects worth over ₹5,400 crore, including the Emergency Landing Facility in Dibrugarh, six-lane bridges, and IIM Guwahati’s temporary campus, reinforcing the government’s commitment to infrastructure-led growth.
Since December 2025, Modi has launched multiple initiatives in the Northeast, including airport expansions, industrial projects, and electric bus services, cumulatively exceeding ₹18,000 crore. The upcoming expressway foundation marks another milestone in the sustained push for development in Assam and the broader Barak Valley region.
