PM Modi to inaugurate redeveloped Jalandhar Cantt railway station on July 17
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantt railway station on July 17 following a major modernisation project costing Rs 125 crore. The 110-year-old station has been upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme as part of Indian Railways' programme to improve passenger facilities and modernise important railway stations across the country.
The Jalandhar Cantt railway station falls under the Ferozepur Division of Northern Railway and has undergone extensive redevelopment aimed at improving passenger convenience and station infrastructure. The project is intended to transform the historic station into a modern transport facility while strengthening its ability to handle growing passenger movement and provide improved services.
Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu visited the redeveloped station on Wednesday to inspect the upgraded facilities and review preparations for the Prime Minister's proposed visit. The inspection focused on arrangements ahead of the scheduled inauguration and the completion of work connected with the redevelopment project.

The station was modernised under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which was launched in 2022 to support the long-term development and upgrading of railway stations across the Indian Railways network. The programme focuses on preparing master plans for stations and implementing improvements in phases based on passenger requirements and the importance of individual locations.
Key objectives of the scheme include improving passenger accessibility, creating better station facilities and strengthening multimodal connectivity with other forms of transport. The programme also seeks to modernise railway infrastructure while making stations more convenient and accessible for passengers. Jalandhar Cantt is among the stations selected for redevelopment under the nationwide initiative.
The July 17 inauguration is expected to mark the formal completion of the Rs 125 crore redevelopment project and the beginning of operations with the upgraded infrastructure. Authorities are continuing preparations ahead of the Prime Minister's visit, with officials reviewing arrangements at the station. The project forms part of the broader effort by Indian Railways to modernise ageing stations and improve the overall passenger experience.
