PM Modi Terms Northeast 'Ashtalakshmi' and Blames Congress for Past Neglect

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday accused the Congress of neglecting the Northeast during its rule, asserting that the BJP-led NDA government regards the region as “Ashtalakshmi,” symbolizing prosperity and strength. The remarks came during a public meeting in Assam ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

Addressing party workers, the Prime Minister credited BJP’s rise to the dedication of its cadre. “Whatever heights the BJP has reached, the credit goes to our party workers. Our faith lies in the organisation,” he said, praising their role as the lifeblood of the party and emphasizing the mantra “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”

PM Modi criticized the Congress for pursuing “vote bank and appeasement” politics, while highlighting the NDA government’s focus on the region’s development. He said infrastructure projects, including highways capable of supporting aircraft landings, mark a dramatic transformation from past neglect.

The Prime Minister framed his visit as a continuation of the government’s post-Union Budget push for economic self-reliance in the Northeast, noting that strategic infrastructure projects are central to the region’s prosperity and integration with national development goals.

Paying tribute to security personnel who died in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, PM Modi said India demonstrated its strength in the aftermath of the attack, emphasizing the country’s firm stance against terrorism and its global visibility in responding to threats.

Concluding his address, he urged BJP workers to intensify efforts for the Assam Assembly polls, reiterating that the party’s focus on development and security in the Northeast sets it apart and underscores its commitment to the region’s welfare.
