PM Modi Stands Firm for Farmers, Jakhar Urges Unity
Punjab BJP chief backs PM against US trade pressure.
Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar called on farmers and stakeholders to unite behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a bold stand against U.S. pressure to open Indian agricultural markets. Speaking in Chandigarh, Jakhar praised Modi’s unwavering commitment to protecting Indian farmers from the devastating impact of foreign agricultural imports, particularly as the U.S. imposes steep tariffs on Indian goods.
Jakhar highlighted the U.S.’s aggressive trade tactics, noting that it has slapped a 50% tariff on Indian exports, effective August 27, 2025, on top of existing 25% duties. He commended Modi for resisting these demands, emphasizing that allowing U.S. agricultural products into India would cripple local farmers. “While global powers bend to U.S. pressure, Modi stands like a wall for our farmers,” Jakhar said, echoing Modi’s August 15 pledge to prioritize farmers, livestock rearers, and fishermen in trade negotiations.
The BJP leader urged farmer organizations to rally behind Modi, stating, “This is the time to stand with the PM in the national interest, strengthening his resolve to fight for farmers’ rights.” He criticized opportunistic parties for exploiting farmers’ issues for political gain, contrasting this with the BJP’s proactive efforts. Jakhar pointed to the recent withdrawal of Punjab’s controversial land pooling policy as a victory for the BJP’s advocacy, which mobilized public opposition to protect farmers’ land from government overreach.

“The people of Punjab now see who truly stands with farmers and who merely plays politics,” Jakhar asserted, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of inaction until public and BJP pressure forced policy changes. He emphasized that Modi’s defiance of U.S. trade demands reflects a broader commitment to safeguarding India’s agricultural backbone, which employs nearly half the nation’s workforce.
As India navigates complex trade talks with the U.S., Jakhar’s call for unity underscores the high stakes for Punjab’s farmers, who face challenges from both global trade pressures and local policy missteps. The BJP’s outreach aims to rebuild trust with rural communities, leveraging Modi’s pro-farmer stance to counter criticisms and strengthen its foothold in Punjab ahead of future elections.
