PM Modi Says India’s Defence Sector Transformed Significantly Over 12 Years Of Surakshit Bharat
India’s defence modernisation accelerated over twelve years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday highlighted what he described as a significant transformation in India’s defence capabilities over the past 12 years, crediting the progress to the government’s focus on self-reliance, indigenous manufacturing, and technological innovation. The remarks were shared on social media under the hashtag “#12YearsOfSurakshitBharat,” alongside a detailed post outlining advancements across India’s defence ecosystem.
The Prime Minister stated that India’s defence sector has evolved significantly, with a stronger emphasis on domestic design, development, and production of military platforms. He noted that innovation-driven growth and strategic investment in technology have strengthened India’s preparedness across land, air, and naval domains.
According to a compilation shared by MyGovIndia, India’s defence journey has seen major developments in indigenous platforms such as the Tejas fighter aircraft, which is now seen as a symbol of the country’s growing aerospace capabilities. The organisation noted that ongoing upgrades, including Tejas Mk-1A and Mk-2, are contributing to the development of a more robust domestic combat aviation ecosystem.

In the area of air defence and artillery, systems such as the Akash missile and Pinaka rocket system were highlighted as key achievements. The Akash system has been positioned as an important component of India’s air defence network, while the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher has enhanced mobility, precision, and battlefield effectiveness through continued indigenous development and upgrades.
Strategic missile and naval capabilities were also emphasised in the update. The Agni-V missile system, including versions equipped with multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV) technology, was described as a major advancement in strategic deterrence. Additionally, developments in hypersonic missile technology were cited as evidence of India’s growing role in advanced defence systems.
Naval modernisation was highlighted through platforms such as INS Arihant, which completed India’s nuclear triad by adding sea-based deterrence capability, and INS Vikrant, the country’s first indigenous aircraft carrier. The post also referenced ongoing naval projects including stealth frigates, destroyers, and submarines, which have strengthened maritime security and underwater warfare capabilities.
The update further noted progress in indigenous missile systems such as BrahMos, Astra, and Rudram, as well as the C-295 aircraft programme, which is expected to enhance tactical airlift capability while expanding domestic aerospace manufacturing. Together, these developments were presented as part of India’s broader push towards an Aatmanirbhar defence industry and long-term strategic self-reliance.
