PM Modi Says India Managed Hormuz Crisis With Minimal Burden On Citizens

PM highlights India’s stable handling of Hormuz disruption.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India successfully managed a major global energy crisis with minimal impact on citizens, crediting diversified energy sourcing, strong diplomatic engagement, and proactive government policies. He made the remarks while addressing a public gathering after inaugurating India’s first greenfield integrated refinery-cum-petrochemical complex in Pachpadra, Balotra district, Rajasthan. The prime minister also laid the foundation stone and inaugurated several other development projects in the state.

Highlighting India’s response to the recent Middle East energy disruption, PM Modi said the country expanded its crude oil import sources significantly to ensure stability in supply. He stated that India increased its energy sourcing network from around 25–26 countries to more than 40 during the crisis period, a move he attributed to strengthened international partnerships and diplomatic outreach. According to him, this diversification helped shield the domestic economy from severe supply shocks seen in other parts of the world.

The prime minister also noted that despite global price volatility, the government ensured that citizens were not heavily burdened. He said public sector oil companies absorbed losses exceeding ₹75,000 crore between April and June due to rising international crude prices. To cushion consumers, the government reduced excise duty by ₹10 per litre, which helped prevent a sharp increase in fuel prices. He said these steps ensured price stability for households while maintaining energy security.

Addressing political criticism and speculation during the crisis period, PM Modi said that attempts to undermine India's resilience had failed. He added that India has now emerged as the world’s fourth-largest refining capacity hub and continues to expand its energy infrastructure. The prime minister also linked energy self-reliance to national strength, saying that a nation’s self-respect remains strong only when it becomes self-sufficient in critical sectors such as energy.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister inaugurated the ₹79,450 crore refinery project in Rajasthan, which is also the state’s first of its kind. The facility, developed as a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and the Government of Rajasthan, is expected to strengthen India’s refining and petrochemical capacity. PM Modi also remarked that the project had slowed during the previous state government’s tenure but had since been completed and revived under the current administration, underscoring what he described as a focus on timely execution of large infrastructure projects.
