PM Modi Reviews LPG Supply and Energy Security with Key Ministers Amid Iran War

PM Modi reviews LPG supply and energy security with key ministers as Iran conflict disrupts global oil routes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a high-level meeting with senior ministers to review India’s energy security and LPG supply situation amid the escalating conflict involving Iran. The meeting was attended by Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, as concerns grow over disruptions to fuel supplies and rising global energy prices.

The review comes as tensions in West Asia threaten key shipping routes used for transporting crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Officials briefed the prime minister on the potential impact of the conflict on India’s fuel imports and domestic availability, particularly as the country depends heavily on the region for energy supplies.

India imports a significant share of its LPG and crude oil from the Middle East, with much of the supply passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The ongoing hostilities and disruptions in maritime traffic have raised concerns about supply chains and possible price volatility, prompting the government to closely monitor the situation and prepare contingency measures.

Government officials have indicated that steps are being taken to maintain adequate supplies for domestic consumers. Authorities have asked refineries to increase LPG production and are exploring alternative import sources to offset potential shortages. Domestic cooking gas supply is being prioritised, while supply to other sectors is under review as part of a broader energy management strategy.

The meeting also comes amid growing concern from the hospitality sector, which relies heavily on commercial LPG cylinders for cooking operations. Industry bodies and state governments have warned that shortages could disrupt restaurant operations and other commercial activities if the supply situation worsens.

Officials said the government will continue to assess developments in the region and coordinate with energy companies and international partners to safeguard India’s fuel security while minimising the impact of the conflict on domestic consumers and businesses.
