Amid Global Tensions, PM Modi Moves To Secure India’s Essential Supplies

PM Modi reviews fuel, power and fertiliser supply amid conflict.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the availability of fuel, power, and fertiliser supplies amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The review comes against the backdrop of growing concerns that the ongoing conflict could disrupt global supply chains and trigger volatility in energy and commodity markets.Senior officials from key ministries, including petroleum and natural gas, power, fertilisers, and external affairs, participated in the meeting. According to government sources, the discussions focused on evaluating existing stock levels, supply continuity, and preparedness for potential disruptions. Authorities are also keeping a close watch on global price movements and shipping conditions that could affect imports.

India remains heavily dependent on imports to meet its crude oil requirements and fertiliser inputs, making it particularly sensitive to geopolitical developments in the Middle East. Any disruption in production or transit routes—especially through the Strait of Hormuz—could have immediate implications for availability and pricing. Officials noted that safeguarding these supply lines is critical to maintaining economic stability. The meeting also reviewed the status of power generation across the country, with a focus on ensuring adequate fuel supply for thermal power plants. While India has strengthened its domestic coal production, certain segments still rely on imported fuel, particularly gas-based plants. Ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply, especially during periods of high demand, was identified as a priority.

On the fertiliser front, the government assessed inventory levels in view of upcoming agricultural requirements. India imports a significant share of its fertiliser needs, including raw materials used in domestic production. Officials discussed strategies to secure alternative sourcing options and maintain buffer stocks to ensure that farmers are not affected by any global supply shocks. The review reflects a broader effort by the government to stay ahead of potential economic impacts arising from the conflict. Rising crude oil prices could increase transportation and manufacturing costs, with downstream effects on inflation. Authorities are therefore evaluating policy options to mitigate any adverse impact on consumers and industry.

Officials emphasised that there is no immediate cause for concern, but maintaining preparedness is essential given the evolving situation. India has, in recent years, diversified its energy import sources and strengthened strategic reserves to cushion against external shocks. These measures are expected to provide some resilience in the face of global uncertainty. As the situation in the Middle East continues to develop, the government is expected to remain engaged both diplomatically and domestically. Close monitoring of supply chains, price trends, and geopolitical developments will be key to ensuring that India’s energy security, power supply, and agricultural needs remain safeguarded in the weeks ahead.
