PM Modi Releases Commemorative Coin And Stamp At Somnath Amrut Mahotsav

PM Modi releases commemorative stamp and Rs 75 coin marking Somnath Temple’s 75-year reconstructed legacy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday released a commemorative postage stamp and a special ₹75 coin during the ‘Somnath Amrut Mahotsav’ celebrations held in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district. The launch took place at a public gathering following a series of religious ceremonies at the historic Somnath Temple, marking 75 years of its post-independence reconstruction and consecration.

The Prime Minister unveiled the commemorative items after participating in key rituals at the temple, including the Kumbhabhishek and Dhwaj Puja. These ceremonies were conducted as part of the grand anniversary celebrations of the shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Thousands of devotees, saints, and officials witnessed the events, which combined religious observance with cultural and national commemorations.

According to official statements from the Prime Minister’s Office, both the stamp and the coin were issued to honour the spiritual and historical significance of Somnath. The ₹75 coin has been specially minted to mark 75 years of the temple’s reconstruction. Officials noted that it also symbolises a broader recognition of the temple’s ancient legacy, which is believed to span over a millennium of cultural importance in Indian civilisation.

The coin, issued by the Ministry of Finance, is made of 99.9 per cent pure silver and weighs 40 grams with a diameter of 44 millimetres. One side features the Lion Capital of Ashoka with the inscription “Satyameva Jayate,” while the reverse side depicts the Somnath Temple along with the inscription “1000 Years of India’s Unwavering Faith and Devotion.” It also includes the year 2026 and the text “Somnath Mandir, Gujarat,” reflecting its commemorative purpose.

The postage stamp released alongside the coin highlights the architectural and spiritual heritage of the Somnath Temple, which is considered one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in India. The Somnath Amrut Mahotsav commemorates the temple’s inauguration in 1951 by India’s first President Rajendra Prasad following its reconstruction efforts supported in the post-independence era. The event also recalls contributions of leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in restoring the shrine.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister held a roadshow in Somnath and participated in various temple rituals alongside Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, temple trustees, saints, and senior officials. The celebrations also included an aerial display by the Indian Air Force’s Suryakiran Aerobatic Team, cultural performances, and large public gatherings attended by devotees from across the country.
