PM Modi plays football with young friends in Gangtok, calling it an energising morning session.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi played football with children and young participants during a morning interaction in Gangtok on Tuesday, describing the experience as a “lovely” and “energising” start to the day. Photographs from the informal session were later shared by the Prime Minister on social media, drawing widespread attention online.

In a post on X, PM Modi wrote that there was “nothing like playing some football with my young friends in Sikkim on a lovely Gangtok morning." In another message, he called the session energising and praised the enthusiasm of the youngsters who joined him on the field. The images showed PM Modi participating casually with the children in a light-hearted atmosphere.

The event highlighted football’s strong popularity in India’s northeastern region, where the sport enjoys a passionate following and deep grassroots presence. States across the Northeast, including Sikkim, have produced talented footballers and hosted numerous local tournaments, academies and youth programmes over the years. Football often rivals cricket as one of the region’s most followed sports.

The PM Modi participation was also seen as an outreach gesture celebrating youth engagement, fitness and sports culture. PM Modi’s Gangtok football session comes amid his broader engagements in the region and adds to a series of symbolic public moments during official visits. The photos quickly circulated across digital platforms, with supporters praising the informal interaction and many users highlighting the enthusiasm of the children who shared the field with the Prime Minister.
