PM Modi Pays Tribute To Mahanayak Uttam Kumar On Birth Centenary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tribute to legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar on his birth centenary, remembering the Mahanayak for his versatility and enduring appeal among audiences. Modi highlighted the actor’s lasting contribution to Bengali cinema and his ability to connect with viewers across generations.

In a tribute shared through social media, Modi recalled Uttam Kumar’s performance in Satyajit Ray’s acclaimed film Nayak. He noted that Ray had written the film with Uttam Kumar in mind and praised the actor’s dignity, emotional depth and dedication to bringing his characters alive on screen.

Modi also recalled Uttam Kumar’s philanthropic side while paying tribute to the actor’s legacy. He mentioned passing by Uttam Kumar’s residence during a roadshow in Kolkata and expressed his deepest respects to the legendary performer, adding that the Mahanayak would continue to remain in the hearts of people.

Born on September 3, 1926, as Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay, Uttam Kumar became one of the most influential figures in Bengali cinema. His celebrated filmography includes classics such as Saptapadi, Harano Sur, Nayak, Antony Firingee, Grihadaha, Jiban Mrityu and Chiriakhana. His screen partnership with Suchitra Sen remains among the most celebrated pairings in Indian cinema.

Uttam Kumar also earned national recognition for his performances in Antony Firingee and Chiriakhana, becoming the first recipient of the National Film Award for Best Actor. His work with Satyajit Ray, including his portrayal of detective Byomkesh Bakshi in Chiriakhana, further demonstrated his range as an actor. He died on July 24, 1980, but his influence on Bengali cinema remains strong.

Centenary celebrations for Uttam Kumar are being held in Kolkata, with tributes from political leaders and members of the film industry. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also remembered the actor for his charisma, emotional depth and timeless screen presence, highlighting the continuing cultural significance of the Mahanayak in Bengal and Indian cinema.
