PM Modi Opens Bhogapuram Airport, Flights to Begin August 17

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vizianagaram district, marking the commissioning of one of the state's largest aviation infrastructure projects. Developed by the GMR Group at a cost of nearly Rs 5,000 crore, the airport is expected to serve as a major gateway for North Andhra and strengthen regional connectivity. Commercial flight operations from the new airport are scheduled to commence on August 17.

The Andhra Pradesh government has described the Bhogapuram Airport as a transformational project aimed at accelerating economic development across the region. Beyond improving air connectivity, the airport is expected to support industrial growth, generate employment, boost exports, encourage skill development and attract investment. Officials believe the project will play a significant role in enhancing the economic prospects of North Andhra by improving access for businesses and travellers.

In its first phase, the airport has been designed to handle up to six million passengers annually. According to the master plan, the facility can eventually be expanded to accommodate as many as 40 million passengers each year, making it one of the largest aviation hubs in the region. The phased expansion is intended to meet future demand as passenger traffic and commercial activity continue to grow over the coming decades.

During the inauguration ceremony, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu briefed the Prime Minister on the airport's key features and long-term development plans. They highlighted its strategic importance in strengthening regional connectivity and supporting the state's broader infrastructure and economic development agenda. The project is expected to improve domestic and international access to North Andhra while complementing the existing airport network in the state.

Following the airport inauguration, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for and inaugurate multiple development projects across Andhra Pradesh with a combined value of nearly Rs 18,000 crore. These projects span various sectors and are aimed at improving infrastructure, connectivity and public services while supporting the state's long-term economic growth. The initiatives form part of the Centre's continued investment in large-scale infrastructure across the country.

The commencement of commercial operations on August 17 is expected to provide a major boost to tourism, trade and investment in North Andhra. Improved air connectivity is anticipated to benefit industries, educational institutions and businesses by reducing travel time and enhancing access to domestic and international markets. With its large expansion potential and strategic location, the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is expected to emerge as a key aviation and economic hub for the region.
