PM Modi Invites Global Investments in Booming Indian Aviation Sector
India eyes over 400 airports by 2047 as civil aviation undergoes historic transformation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called for increased investments in India’s rapidly expanding civil aviation sector, describing the past decade as a period of “historic transformation.” Speaking virtually at the Wings India 2026 aviation summit in New Delhi, Modi underlined the sector’s immense growth potential and positioned India as an emerging global aviation hub.
He projected that the country will have more than 400 airports by 2047, significantly boosting connectivity and economic activity. Modi stressed the need for self-reliance, stating that India cannot depend on foreign sources for its aviation requirements in manufacturing, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), and other critical areas.
Highlighting strategic reforms, the Prime Minister noted that India is fast becoming a key gateway linking the Global South with the rest of the world. This development opens substantial opportunities for investors, manufacturers, and technology providers in the aviation ecosystem.

Modi’s address comes amid strong passenger growth, expansion of low-cost carriers, and government initiatives like UDAN for regional connectivity. The push for investments aligns with India’s ambition to rank among the world’s top three aviation markets and reduce reliance on imports for aircraft components and services.
As the sector recovers and grows post-pandemic, experts see huge potential in airport infrastructure, aircraft leasing, sustainable aviation fuel, and drone technology. The Prime Minister’s invitation is expected to attract both domestic and international players looking to tap into one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally.
