PM Modi Invites Canadian PM Carney, Who Accepts Historic Visit to India in Early 2026

Canadian PM Mark Carney accepts Narendra Modi’s invite, set to visit India amid efforts to strengthen bilateral ties.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation to visit India in early 2026, following bilateral talks at the G20 summit in Johannesburg. The leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in defence, space, trade, investment, technology, and energy. They also decided to formally begin negotiations for an ambitious Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) covering goods, services, agriculture, digital trade, and sustainable development.

The talks emphasized the importance of regular high-level reciprocal visits, including ministers and business communities, to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties. Progress was also noted in law enforcement dialogue between the two countries.

Relations between India and Canada had soured after allegations in 2023 made by then-Canadian PM Justin Trudeau linking India to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which India dismissed as baseless. Recent diplomatic efforts are focused on normalizing relations, with several mechanisms being revived to advance cooperation across various sectors.

The upcoming visit by PM Carney is seen as a significant step in resetting India-Canada relations, with potential to enhance bilateral trade, investment, and strategic partnership, while signaling a fresh chapter of collaboration and mutual trust.

This development positions both countries to potentially double their trade to $50-70 billion by 2030 through the CEPA and expanded cooperation frameworks, accentuating a renewed camaraderie on the global stage.
