PM Modi Inaugurates CG Semi OSAT Facility in Gujarat's Sanand
PM Modi inaugurates semiconductor facility, calls it India's Viksit Bharat roadmap.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the CG Semi Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility in Sanand, describing the project as an important step in India’s effort to build a complete electronics and semiconductor value chain. He said the country was progressing from manufacturing finished electronic products to components and now semiconductors, a transition he described as part of India’s roadmap towards becoming a developed nation.
During the inauguration, Modi was presented with the first semiconductor chips produced at the facility, which are expected to be exported to Japan. He said the expansion of India’s semiconductor industry had not happened overnight but was the next stage of the electronics manufacturing transformation witnessed over the past decade. According to the Prime Minister, the country is now entering a new phase of the Make in India initiative by expanding its capabilities in advanced chip manufacturing and related technologies.
Modi said India’s strategy was to build the entire electronics value chain within the country, beginning with products, followed by components and now semiconductors. He described this progression as central to the vision of Viksit Bharat and said the government was working to create a complete semiconductor ecosystem. The objective is to develop domestic capabilities across chip design, fabrication, assembly, testing and packaging rather than depending heavily on overseas supply chains.

The Prime Minister said the new CG Semi facility would strengthen India’s chip manufacturing ecosystem, improve technological self-reliance and enhance the country’s position in the global semiconductor value chain. Semiconductor chips are essential components used across industries, including smartphones, computers, automobiles, telecommunications equipment and advanced industrial systems. Expanding domestic production is therefore seen as important for both economic growth and strategic technological security.
Referring to the government’s Semicon India programme, Modi said the initiative was gathering momentum through the gradual development of projects and infrastructure across the country. He said India was advancing “step by step, brick by brick and chip by chip” as it worked to establish itself as a major participant in the global semiconductor industry. The government has been seeking to attract investment and develop the skills and infrastructure required for large-scale chip production.
Modi also said India’s young population would play a major role in driving future developments in artificial intelligence, robotics and next-generation technologies using chips manufactured within the country. The inauguration of the Sanand facility marks another step in India’s wider effort to reduce dependence on imported semiconductors and strengthen its advanced manufacturing capabilities. The government hopes such projects will help create a sustainable domestic chip ecosystem while increasing India’s role in global technology supply chains.
