PM Modi Honors Sardar Patel’s Role In Somnath Temple Reconstruction During Amrut Mahotsav
PM Modi pays tribute to Sardar Patel at Somnath, reaffirms commitment to his vision for India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel during the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav at the historic Somnath Temple, reaffirming his government’s commitment to carrying forward Patel’s vision for a united and culturally rooted India. The remarks were made during a series of religious and commemorative events marking 75 years of the temple’s reconstruction after Independence.
In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister said Patel played a defining role in the restoration of the Somnath Temple and had envisioned its revival as a symbol of India’s civilisational pride and spiritual continuity. He stated that Patel’s efforts reflected not only political leadership but also a deeper commitment to preserving India’s heritage. Modi added that his government remains committed to fulfilling Patel’s vision for the nation’s development and identity.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister participated in several rituals at the temple, including Vishesh Maha Puja, Kumbhabhishek, and Dhwajarohan ceremonies. These events formed part of the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav, which commemorates the 1951 inauguration of the reconstructed temple by India’s first President Rajendra Prasad. The celebrations also included the release of a commemorative postage stamp and a ₹75 coin to mark the milestone anniversary.

Addressing a large public gathering later, Modi highlighted the historical significance of the temple’s reconstruction, stating that it symbolised India’s “independent civilisational consciousness” after Independence. He credited Sardar Patel with uniting over 500 princely states and said the rebuilding of Somnath represented India’s renewed confidence and cultural resurgence. He also noted that Patel and Dr Rajendra Prasad had faced opposition during the reconstruction process but remained committed to the project.
The Prime Minister also referred to ideological differences surrounding the temple’s restoration, alleging that there had been resistance from some political quarters during the post-Independence period. He extended this argument to contemporary issues, stating that similar “forces” still exist in modern India that prioritise appeasement over national pride. Modi linked the Somnath restoration to other major cultural developments, including the construction of the Ram Temple, describing them as part of India’s broader civilisational journey.
Concluding his speech, Modi said the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav should not be seen merely as a commemoration of the past but as an inspiration for India’s future. He described it as a “festival of inspiration” for the next thousand years, emphasising the need to balance development with heritage. The event was attended by senior officials, saints, and thousands of devotees, along with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other dignitaries.
