PM Modi Highlights India’s Transition To Pharma Innovation Hub Driven By R&D

PM Modi says India’s pharma sector is evolving from global supplier to innovation-driven hub.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that India’s pharmaceutical sector is undergoing a major transformation, moving beyond its global identity as the “pharmacy of the world” towards becoming a hub of innovation driven by research and advanced drug development.

In a post shared on social media, Narendra Modi highlighted that the country’s pharma industry is steadily advancing up the value chain. He noted that the sector is increasingly focused on research and development, biologics, biosimilars, and next-generation therapies, marking a shift from large-scale generic drug manufacturing to innovation-led growth.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came while sharing an article authored by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, which described India’s pharmaceutical evolution as a structured transition supported by sustained policy interventions. The article was referred to as a “must-read retrospection” on how India is positioning itself in the global pharmaceutical landscape.

According to the article, India’s pharmaceutical industry, long recognised for its dominance in affordable generic medicines, is now expanding its focus towards cutting-edge research capabilities. It highlights that government initiatives are encouraging higher investment in research and development and supporting an ecosystem for advanced drug discovery.

It further notes that growing emphasis on biologics and biosimilars is expected to play a key role in shaping the next phase of industry growth. These segments are seen as critical to global healthcare innovation and represent a shift towards more complex and high-value pharmaceutical products.

Narendra Modi said that this transition reflects India’s broader ambition to strengthen its position in the global healthcare and innovation ecosystem. The message underscores the government’s focus on transforming the sector into a research-driven industry while maintaining its established role as a major supplier of affordable medicines worldwide.
