PM Modi Drives BJP’s Rajya Sabha Election Strategy In High-Stakes Poll Panel Meeting
PM Modi chairs BJP meet for Rajya Sabha strategy.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday held a meeting of its Central Election Committee (CEC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strategise for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18 across multiple states. The meeting, held in the national capital, was attended by senior leaders including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president J P Nadda, and other members of the party’s top decision-making body. Discussions focused on finalising candidates and strengthening the party’s electoral positioning in the Upper House of Parliament.
The upcoming Rajya Sabha polls will cover 24 seats across 10 states in the second phase of elections this year. The BJP is aiming to retain a significant portion of its existing representation, with the terms of 11 party MPs set to end in this cycle. Party estimates suggest that the BJP and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners are likely to secure around 17 of the 24 available seats, reflecting a strong position in several state assemblies where indirect voting determines outcomes.
According to internal projections, the party expects to win multiple seats across key states, including four in Gujarat, two in Madhya Pradesh, three in Rajasthan, one in Andhra Pradesh (with support from regional allies such as the Telugu Desam Party or Jana Sena Party), two in Manipur, one in Arunachal Pradesh, and a possible additional seat in Karnataka depending on legislative arithmetic. These calculations are based on the current strength of state assemblies and alliance dynamics.

The Election Commission schedule also includes Rajya Sabha contests in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh. The outcomes in these states are expected to be shaped by coalition alignments and party strength in respective state legislatures, given the indirect nature of Rajya Sabha elections.
In addition to the Upper House strategy, the CEC also reviewed nominations for Legislative Council elections in states such as Bihar and Maharashtra. The biennial election for 16 Maharashtra Legislative Council seats is also set for June 18, with the party finalising candidates for local authority constituencies during the meeting.
Separately, the BJP’s OBC Morcha held a parallel organisational meeting under the leadership of its national president K Laxman, focusing on grassroots mobilisation efforts to highlight the achievements of the NDA government over the past 12 years. The discussions were aimed at strengthening outreach among backward class communities ahead of upcoming electoral battles at both state and national levels.
