PM Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving PM With 12 Years In Office; NDA To Honour Milestone
PM Modi completes 12 years, becomes India’s longest-serving Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to become India’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister on Wednesday, completing 12 years in office at the helm of the central government. The milestone marks a significant moment in Indian political history as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) prepares to honour him for the achievement.
According to official calculations, Modi will have served 4,399 consecutive days as Prime Minister, surpassing previous records for continuous tenure. India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, held office from independence in 1947 until his death in 1964 after becoming the first elected PM following the 1951–52 general elections. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi also served for nearly 16 years in total, though across two separate terms.
Modi’s tenure since 2014 has been marked by significant political consolidation for the BJP, which expanded its electoral footprint beyond traditional strongholds and emerged as a dominant national force. Over three general elections, the party has maintained a central role in national governance, supported by a broad alliance of regional partners within the NDA framework.

Over the past 12 years, the government has cited a range of policy and governance initiatives as key achievements, including expansion of welfare delivery systems, digital payment infrastructure such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and reforms in taxation and public distribution. It has also highlighted investments in transport infrastructure, including highways, railways, and airports, as part of its development agenda. Additionally, the government has pointed to national security operations and counter-insurgency efforts as part of its broader governance record.
The NDA is expected to formally mark the occasion with events and acknowledgements recognising Modi’s tenure and leadership. The milestone comes as the government continues to emphasise its development and governance narrative ahead of upcoming political cycles, while the Prime Minister’s long tenure places him among the most enduring leaders in India’s post-independence history.
