PM Modi Arrives in Tripura to Inaugurate Redeveloped Tripureswari Temple

Over 500-year-old Shakti Peetha redeveloped under the PRASAD scheme at ₹52 crore.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tripura's capital, Agartala, on Monday to inaugurate the redeveloped Tripureswari temple in Gomati district, a significant site among the 51 revered Shakti Peethas in Hinduism. The visit underscores the central government's focus on preserving cultural heritage and boosting pilgrimage tourism in the Northeast. Officials confirmed that Modi proceeded from the airport to Palatana in Udaipur via helicopter, followed by a road journey to the temple, highlighting the logistical efforts to ensure a smooth event amid the region's challenging terrain.

The Tripureswari temple, dating back over 500 years, holds profound religious importance as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas—sacred sites believed to mark locations where parts of Goddess Sati's body fell, according to Hindu mythology. Legend attributes the temple's establishment to Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in the 16th century, dedicated to Goddess Tripura Sundari, an incarnation of Durga. The redevelopment, completed under the Pradhan Mantri's Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASAD) scheme, cost approximately Rs 52 crore. The initiative modernised facilities while preserving the temple's architectural essence, including enhanced pilgrim amenities, better accessibility, and conservation of ancient artefacts to attract more devotees and tourists.

Following the inauguration, Modi is scheduled to offer prayers at the temple, a ritual that symbolises the government's commitment to cultural revival. The PRASAD scheme, launched in 2014-15 and expanded in 2021, aims to develop 75 selected pilgrimage sites nationwide, with Tripura's project exemplifying efforts in the Northeast to integrate spirituality with economic growth. Local authorities anticipate a surge in visitors, potentially boosting the state's tourism sector, which contributes significantly to Tripura's economy alongside agriculture and handicrafts.

Modi's trip aligns with broader developmental engagements in the region, reflecting his frequent visits to Northeast states to inaugurate infrastructure and heritage projects. As Tripura, a BJP-ruled state since 2018, continues to strengthen ties with the centre, the event is expected to foster communal harmony and regional pride. Devotees and officials gathered in anticipation, viewing the redevelopment as a milestone in safeguarding Tripura's rich spiritual legacy for future generations.
