PM Modi Announces ₹1,200 Cr Relief Aid for Flood-Hit Uttarakhand

Massive aid, help for orphans, and urgent support after deadly floods rock the hill state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a visit to Dehradun on Thursday, announced a substantial financial assistance package of Rs 1,200 crore to support the restoration and rebuilding of infrastructure in Uttarakhand’s flood and rain-affected regions. The announcement comes in response to a series of devastating natural calamities, including heavy rains, cloudbursts, and landslides, that have ravaged the hill state this monsoon season.

The prime minister also declared an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 for individuals injured in the disasters, which have claimed 85 lives, injured 128 people, and left 94 missing since April 2025, according to official estimates. Affected areas include Dharali-Harsil in Uttarkashi, Tharali in Chamoli, Chenagad in Rudraprayag, Sainji in Pauri, Kapkot in Bageshwar, and parts of Nainital district.

In a significant move, Modi extended comprehensive support under the PM CARES for Children scheme to children orphaned due to the recent floods and landslides. During his visit, he met with affected families to offer condolences and interacted with personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and disaster volunteers, commending their tireless efforts at ground zero.

Upon arriving at Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, Modi was received by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who praised the prime minister’s sensitivity toward the affected communities. In a social media post, Dhami noted, “The prime minister’s presence in the midst of the affected people at this difficult time of disaster shows his sensitivity towards them.”

The central government has pledged full support for rebuilding efforts, following a recent assessment by an inter-ministerial team dispatched to evaluate the damage. Modi’s visit to Uttarakhand comes on the heels of his trips to Varanasi, where he met Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, where he announced a Rs 1,600-crore relief package for flood-hit Punjab.

The Prime Minister’s proactive response underscores the central government’s commitment to supporting disaster-affected states, with a focus on immediate relief and long-term recovery.
