People's Support Needed! Omar Abdullah on Ending Terrorism

Omar Abdullah: Militancy in J&K Cannot End Without People’s Support

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized on Monday that militancy in the union territory cannot be eradicated without the active support of its people.

Speaking to reporters outside the assembly in Jammu ahead of the day’s proceedings, Abdullah underscored his government’s commitment to assisting the Union Home Ministry and the Lieutenant Governor in maintaining peace, despite security not being a direct state responsibility.

“Though it’s not our direct responsibility, I keep saying that militancy cannot be finished without the people’s support. My government is making efforts and supporting the Lt Governor to keep the situation under control and ensure peace,” Abdullah said.

His remarks came in response to queries about an ongoing anti-terror operation in Sanyal village near the International Border in Kathua’s Hiranagar sector, which entered its second day on Monday.

The operation, launched Sunday evening following reports of suspicious movement, has seen no fresh contact with the terrorists as of yet, according to Abdullah. “Such incidents have occurred before. Based on my information, no contact has been established with the terrorists so far. The cordon-and-search operation continues, and we’ll see how it unfolds,” he noted. He acknowledged the possibility of infiltration from across the border, given Sanyal’s proximity to Pakistan, but cautioned against premature conclusions.

“It’s too early to say anything definitive. Let’s wait for developments,” he added.

Addressing the recurring terror incidents in Kathua and Billawar, Abdullah pointed to a broader pattern of unrest in the Jammu region. “Over the past couple of years, areas like Rajouri, Poonch, and others have witnessed terror activities. Their intent is to disturb peace,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to counter such threats.
