Patan Residents Find Locality Name Changed From Jhapatpara to Islampura

Gujarat residents demand answers after locality renamed without official approval.

A controversy has emerged in Gujarat's Patan district after residents of a locality known as Jhapatpara claimed that official records and identity documents now identify the area as "Islampura." The issue came to light during a routine government survey, when residents allegedly discovered the discrepancy in official documents. The unexpected change has prompted questions over when the name was altered, who authorised it and whether the required administrative procedures were followed before the modification was reflected in government records.

According to residents, they had never been informed of any proposal or official decision to rename the locality. They claim no resolution or request seeking such a change was passed by the local authorities, raising concerns about how the new name came to appear in official documents. Residents say the discrepancy has created confusion and led to bureaucratic difficulties in matters involving identity records and other government-related documentation.

Some local residents have alleged that the locality was historically inhabited by Hindu families and that its demographic composition changed over the years as members of the Muslim community settled in the area. They have questioned whether the reported change in the locality's name was influenced by this demographic shift and have demanded clarity on the legal and administrative basis for the alteration. Authorities have not publicly confirmed these allegations or the reasons behind the appearance of the new name in official records.

The issue has led to demands for an official inquiry into the matter. Residents are seeking details regarding who approved the change, what documentary evidence was relied upon and why the alleged alteration was not communicated to the local community. They have also called for a review of the administrative process to determine whether any procedural lapses occurred and to establish accountability if irregularities are found.

Amid the growing controversy, some residents have appealed for communal harmony and urged that the issue not be allowed to create divisions within the locality. Imtiyaz Rehman Khan, a local resident, said the matter should not be used to disturb the peaceful coexistence between Hindu and Muslim families. He maintained that people from both communities have lived together harmoniously and urged officials to investigate the issue and resolve the confusion over the locality's official name.

The reported discrepancy has placed the focus on the accuracy of government records and the procedures governing changes to place names. Residents have urged the administration to verify the official status of the locality, clarify whether any formal renaming process was undertaken and rectify any errors if necessary. As of now, the authorities have not issued a detailed public explanation regarding the alleged change, and the matter remains under public scrutiny.
