Passenger Train Caught Fire at Sasaram, in Bihar, Likely Cause Electrical Short Circuit

Passenger train fire in Bihar likely caused by short circuit incident.

A passenger train travelling towards Patna caught fire at Sasaram railway station in Bihar early Monday morning, in an incident that officials suspect was caused by a short circuit. The blaze broke out while the train was stationed at platform number six, shortly before its scheduled departure, leading to panic among passengers and railway staff present at the station.According to preliminary information, the fire started in one of the coaches of the Sasaram–Patna fast passenger train around 6 am. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising rapidly from the affected compartment, prompting immediate evacuation efforts.

Railway personnel on the platform quickly alerted emergency services as the situation escalated within minutes.Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, along with local police and fire brigade teams, rushed to the spot to control the situation. Firefighters worked to douse the flames, and after sustained efforts, the blaze was brought under control. Officials confirmed that one coach was completely gutted in the fire, though no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.

Initial assessments by railway officials suggest that the fire may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit inside the coach. However, a detailed investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the incident. Technical teams are currently examining the damaged coach and associated electrical systems to rule out any additional safety lapses.

Following the incident, railway authorities began procedures to detach the affected coach from the rest of the train. Officials said that the remaining coaches would undergo a thorough safety inspection before the train is cleared for further movement. The schedule of the train was also disrupted due to the incident, causing delays for passengers who were expected to travel on the route early in the morning.Eyewitnesses at the station described scenes of confusion and alarm as smoke rapidly filled the platform area. Many passengers reportedly rushed away from the train as soon as the fire was noticed. Railway staff acted quickly to ensure that passengers were moved to safe areas, preventing what could have been a more serious situation.

This incident has once again raised concerns over fire safety standards in Indian Railways, coming just a day after a similar episode involving a Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district. In that case, an air-conditioned coach caught fire while en route, but all passengers were safely evacuated after emergency systems automatically halted the train. In response to such incidents, railway authorities have reportedly launched a nationwide review of fire safety systems in coaches and related infrastructure. The exercise aims to assess the readiness of fire detection and suppression systems and to identify potential vulnerabilities in rolling stock across the network.

Officials have stated that lessons from recent incidents will be used to strengthen safety protocols and emergency response mechanisms. The focus is expected to be on improving electrical maintenance, enhancing early warning systems, and ensuring quicker response times during emergencies. As investigations continue into the Sasaram incident, authorities have urged passengers to remain calm and assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure safety. The damaged coach will remain under examination until investigators complete their assessment and clear the train for further operations.
