Parliament Faces Delay In Rebuilding Panel Responsible For MPs’ Accommodation Matters

The Lok Sabha House Committee, which oversees residential accommodation and related facilities for Members of Parliament, is awaiting reconstitution after its one-year term ended last month. The committee's tenure concluded on July 3, but a new panel has not yet been appointed, leaving the key parliamentary body pending renewal. The House Committee plays an important role in managing issues related to accommodation provided to Lok Sabha members in Delhi. It examines matters concerning government housing, essential services, and other facilities available to MPs during their tenure.

The panel works to ensure that members have suitable living arrangements and that concerns related to their residential amenities are addressed. The committee was constituted in 2024 for a one-year term and was subsequently reconstituted in 2025. According to parliamentary procedure, the panel is appointed by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and generally remains functional for a period of one year. The committee usually consists of up to 12 members from the Lower House, with the chairperson nominated by the Speaker.

Among its responsibilities, the House Committee reviews the condition of residential facilities allotted to MPs and makes recommendations for improvements. It examines issues related to basic amenities such as water supply, electricity, maintenance, and other services required for the proper upkeep of government accommodation. The committee also considers complaints and suggestions from members regarding their living conditions. The delay in reconstituting the committee comes as several parliamentary panels are periodically renewed based on their prescribed terms.

Parliamentary committees serve as important mechanisms for detailed examination of administrative matters and provide recommendations to improve the functioning of various systems connected with legislative work. The House Committee's role is particularly significant because a large number of Lok Sabha members depend on government-provided accommodation in the national capital during their parliamentary tenure. Ensuring proper maintenance and availability of essential facilities is considered an important administrative responsibility linked to the functioning of Parliament.

The committee does not deal with legislative matters but focuses on improving the overall working environment and welfare-related concerns of Lok Sabha members. Its recommendations often involve coordination with government agencies responsible for maintaining residential colonies and providing essential services. Once reconstituted, the new committee will be expected to take up pending matters related to MPs' accommodation and review existing facilities. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha will decide the composition of the panel, including its members and chairperson, in accordance with parliamentary norms. Until then, issues falling under the committee's scope may remain pending for formal consideration by the newly appointed body.
