Paper Leak Fears Force Maharashtra TET 2026 Postponement Just One Day Before Examination

Authorities postpone Maharashtra TET amid alleged paper leak investigation.

The Maharashtra government has postponed the Maharashtra Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) 2026 just a day before it was scheduled to be conducted after authorities uncovered evidence of an alleged question paper leak. The examination, which was to be held on June 28 at 1,028 centres across the state, was deferred following a police operation that reportedly recovered documents containing questions matching the official test paper. The decision was taken to protect the integrity of the examination process and ensure fairness for lakhs of candidates.

According to Maharashtra State Examination Council Director Nandkumar Bedse, police received confidential information in the early hours of June 27 indicating that a group of individuals in Bhiwandi was in possession of the TET question paper before the examination. Acting on the tip-off, the Bhiwandi Police conducted a raid at the suspected location and recovered documents believed to be linked to the examination. Officials from the Maharashtra State Examination Council were subsequently called to verify the seized material.

During the verification process, examination authorities found that several questions contained in the recovered documents matched those in the official TET 2026 question paper scheduled to be used in the examination. Following the confirmation, the council recommended postponing the examination to prevent any compromise to the recruitment process. A criminal case has since been registered, and police have launched a detailed investigation to identify those responsible for the alleged leak and determine how the confidential examination material was accessed.

The Teachers Eligibility Test is a crucial qualifying examination for candidates seeking teaching positions in primary and upper primary schools across Maharashtra. Conducted by the Maharashtra State Examination Council, the TET assesses the eligibility of aspiring teachers and serves as an important requirement for recruitment in government and government-aided educational institutions. Given the scale of the examination and the large number of candidates involved, maintaining the confidentiality of the question papers is considered essential to ensuring a transparent and credible selection process.

The postponement is expected to affect lakhs of candidates who had completed their preparations and were scheduled to appear at examination centres across the state on June 28. Authorities have urged candidates to remain patient and avoid relying on rumours circulating on social media regarding the examination. The Maharashtra State Examination Council has assured applicants that a revised examination schedule will be announced after the investigation progresses and appropriate safeguards are put in place to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.

The latest development has once again raised concerns about the security of competitive examinations in India, where several recruitment and entrance tests have faced allegations of paper leaks in recent years. State authorities have reiterated their commitment to conducting a fair and transparent examination and have promised strict action against those found involved in the alleged leak. Meanwhile, the police investigation continues as officials work to trace the source of the leaked material and identify all individuals connected to the case before announcing fresh dates for the Maharashtra TET 2026 examination.
