Pandavani Icon Teejan Bai Dies At 70, Leaving Folk Art World In Mourning
Renowned Pandavani artist leaves behind a lasting legacy.
Teejan Bai, the legendary Pandavani singer who brought Chhattisgarh's traditional storytelling art to global audiences, died on Sunday after a prolonged illness at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raipur. She was 70. The Padma Vibhushan awardee had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since May 27, and her death marks the end of an era for one of India's most celebrated folk traditions.
Born in Durg district of Chhattisgarh, Teejan Bai was widely regarded as the foremost exponent of Pandavani, a traditional narrative folk art that recounts episodes from the Mahabharata through dramatic storytelling, singing and musical accompaniment. Over several decades, she transformed what was once largely a regional performance tradition into an internationally recognised art form. Her powerful voice, expressive stage presence and distinctive style earned her acclaim across India and abroad, making her one of the country's most respected cultural ambassadors.
Teejan Bai's contribution to Indian folk arts was recognised with the country's highest civilian honours over the course of her career. She received the Padma Shri, followed by the Padma Bhushan, and later the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to preserving and promoting India's cultural heritage. Through countless performances, she introduced audiences around the world to the rich oral storytelling traditions of Chhattisgarh, inspiring generations of artists to carry forward the centuries-old art form.

Her performances combined emotion, rhythm and theatrical expression, helping preserve an important part of India's intangible cultural heritage.
Her death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, artists and cultural organisations, who have described her as an irreplaceable figure in Indian folk music. With a career spanning decades, Teejan Bai not only elevated Pandavani to global prominence but also ensured that the traditions of rural Chhattisgarh found a place on the world's cultural stage.
