Eminent journalist, former diplomat, and Padma Bhushan awardee H K Dua passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88. Dua breathed his last peacefully at a private hospital in New Delhi, where he had been admitted three weeks ago due to declining health. His cremation is scheduled for Thursday at the Lodhi Road crematorium, where family, friends, and colleagues are expected to pay their respects.
Dua enjoyed a rare distinction in Indian journalism, having led three of the country’s most prominent newspapers. He served as Editor of The Hindustan Times from 1987 to 1994, where he strengthened the paper’s political coverage and editorial independence. He then became Editor-in-Chief of The Indian Express (1994-1996) and later The Tribune (2003-2009), also advising The Times of India (1997-1998) on editorial strategy. Across these roles, Dua was known for incisive political commentary and a commitment to balanced reporting during turbulent times in India’s history.
In addition to his media work, Dua held several high-profile positions in public service. He served as India’s Ambassador to Denmark from 2001 to 2003, enhancing bilateral cultural and economic ties. He was also a media advisor to Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and H D Deve Gowda, helping shape communication strategies and providing counsel on domestic and international affairs. His expertise in political analysis made him a trusted voice in government circles.

Dua’s contributions extended to the legislative sphere. He was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 2009 to 2015, actively participating in debates on foreign affairs, national security, and governance reforms. He served on the National Security Advisory Board and was part of several parliamentary committees, including the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs, bringing journalistic insight to policy discussions.
Born in December 1937, Dua received numerous honors for his professional excellence. In addition to the Padma Bhushan, he was conferred honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) degrees by Punjab University and Kurukshetra University. His career spanned decades of reporting, editing, and diplomacy, during which he mentored countless journalists and influenced public discourse through principled reporting.
