Over 6 Die Daily on Delhi Railway Tracks Despite Strict Action: RPF Data Reveals Grim Reality

Delhi railway tracks see over 6 daily deaths in 2025 despite RPF crackdown and awareness drives.

An average of more than six people continue to die daily on railway tracks in the Delhi Division of Northern Railways, according to data from the Railway Protection Force (RPF). Despite strict monitoring, awareness campaigns, and legal enforcement, the problem persists, highlighting both public negligence and infrastructural challenges.

Data indicates that 2,562 deaths were recorded in 2024 due to accidents on railway tracks, which fell slightly to 2,402 in 2025, while injuries decreased from 666 to 582. Officials attribute the minor decline to increased vigilance, but caution that the daily average remains alarming and the risk has not been eradicated.

Shortcuts, illegal passages, and attempts to board or alight from moving trains remain the primary causes of accidents. Areas between Anand Vihar and Sahibabad, including Shahdara, Faridabad, Azadpur Sabzi Mandi, Adarsh Nagar, and the Ghaziabad-Sahibabad section, have been identified as “death hotspots” due to high pedestrian traffic and unsafe transit routes.

Despite the presence of underpasses, foot overbridges, fencing, and CCTV surveillance, residents continue to cross tracks with bicycles, gas cylinders, and other items, often ignoring warnings. RPF officials say this reflects a broader crisis of public behavior rather than only a law enforcement challenge.

RPF Divisional Security Commissioner Ashutosh Pandey emphasized that patrolling, awareness campaigns in schools and colonies, legal action, and surveillance have been intensified. “Railway tracks are not roads. Trying to save a few minutes can prove fatal. Until risky behavior stops, accidents will continue,” he warned.

The authorities have called for a combined effort of strict enforcement, public awareness, and safer infrastructure to reduce fatalities. They stress that while measures such as fencing, CCTV monitoring, and fines help, the cooperation of citizens is critical to preventing future deaths and making Delhi’s railway tracks safer for all.
