Opposition MPs Slam Bihar SIR, Demand PM’s Presence
Protest erupts over electoral roll revision in Bihar.
Opposition MPs, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a fiery protest at Parliament’s Makar Dwar on Tuesday, condemning the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls. The MPs, from parties like Congress, SP, RJD, TMC, DMK, and JMM, raised slogans and held placards reading “SIR: Stealing Indian Rights” and “SIR: Subverting Indian Republic,” alleging the revision undermines fair elections.
Following a meeting of INDIA bloc leaders, including Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, the opposition resolved to demand Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence in Parliament to address critical issues. These include the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, Donald Trump’s India-Pakistan ceasefire remarks, Bihar’s SIR process, delimitation, atrocities against marginalized communities, the Air India 171 plane crash, and Manipur’s unrest. Congress leader K C Venugopal emphasized these as “people’s issues” requiring urgent priority.
The opposition also vowed to ensure Rahul Gandhi’s right to speak in the House and to raise the SIR issue in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, signaling intensified parliamentary debates.
