ONGC Gas Well Fire in Konaseema Extinguished After 5 Days

Massive fire at ONGC gas well in Konaseema fully extinguished after five days of intense efforts.

A massive fire triggered by a gas blowout at ONGC’s Mori-5 well in Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district has been extinguished, authorities confirmed on Saturday morning. The Konaseema District Joint Collector, T Nisanthi, stated that the blowout is now fully under control and almost no flames remain.

The fire erupted on January 5 near Mori and Irusumanda villages, producing a fireball reaching 20 metres in height and 25 metres in width. The well is operated by ONGC’s Production Enhancement Contractor, Deep Industries Ltd, based in Ahmedabad, under the supervision of ONGC.

Following the disaster, ONGC senior management took direct operational control and deployed its Crisis Management Team to tackle the blaze. Over the course of nearly five days, the team worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire while ensuring safety and preventing environmental damage.

Currently, operations to cap the gas well and conduct mudding—a technical procedure to stabilize the well—are underway. Authorities have confirmed that there was no loss of life or injuries during the incident, despite the massive scale of the fire.

The incident highlights the potential hazards associated with gas blowouts and underscores the importance of rapid crisis management. Local authorities and ONGC continue to monitor the site closely to prevent any further emergencies and ensure the safety of nearby villages.
