One Dead As Storm Causes Widespread Damage In Assam
One killed as storm causes damage across Assam
One person was killed in Assam’s Kamrup district after a powerful storm accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds lashed several parts of the state, causing widespread disruption, damage to property, and flooding in low-lying areas, officials said.
The incident occurred in Chaygaon, around 50 km from Guwahati, during a Bihu cultural programme on Monday night. According to eyewitnesses, a local youth who had taken shelter under a tree with others was struck when a large branch snapped and fell during the storm. The impact proved fatal on the spot.
Preliminary reports suggest the deceased may be a youth identified as Akhtar Ali from the neighbouring Hatigaon area, who had been missing since Sunday evening. However, police said formal identification is still underway, with family members reportedly recognising the body based on clothing.

The storm affected multiple districts, including Goalpara and Bongaigaon, where extensive damage to crops and property was reported. In Guwahati, several areas remained inundated for days following heavy rainfall, with waterlogging severely affecting daily life in residential and commercial zones.
Low-lying neighbourhoods such as Rukminigaon, Anil Nagar, and Nabin Nagar were among the worst affected, with residents struggling to clear water and debris as floodwaters slowly receded. In some areas, water levels had previously risen to chest height during peak rainfall.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority had earlier reported multiple rain-related incidents, including the death of a woman in Maligaon after she fell into a drain during heavy rainfall on Sunday. Authorities have also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incidents to determine responsibility and assess preventive lapses.
The Guwahati administration, along with municipal and water resources departments, has been placed on round-the-clock alert to manage ongoing waterlogging and potential landslide risks. Residents in vulnerable hillside zones have been urged to remain cautious as weather conditions continue to remain unstable in parts of the state.
